IGE March Meeting- 7th March- Breton Embroidery: from Traditional Regional Costume to Modern Haute Couture Usage

“Breton Embroidery: from Traditional Regional Costume to Modern Haute Couture Usage”…

Talk by Debbie Wilson at 10:30am on 7th March 2015

Mount Merrion Community Hall, Mount Merrion Co Dublin

Debbie plans show us some pix of the national Breton Costume museum, and finish with some from Pascal Jaouen’s retrospective exhibition – he’s a couturier, renowned in Paris & those echelons of society that spend huge amounts on once-off items! – as he uses modernised Breton embroidery on all his clothes…including felted ones! His workshops close for July & Augusts so he runs courses there along the lines of the “courses” he has in classes all over Brittany and Paris teaching Breton embroidery.

March 2015 Workshop

Breton Embroidery

7th & 8th of March

7th of March- Afternoon- starting at 1:30-4;00pm

8th of March- All day- 10am-4pm- bring packed lunch-there will be coffee and tea.

by Debbie Wilson

The participants to the workshop will only need their preferred type of needle – a Darner #5 or Chenille prob #20 (although I did this one using a Tapestry #22!), embroidery scissors, and if they wish to, a selection of perlé cottons.

Debbie will have a good selection of her own cottons for use, and some (House of Embroidery variegated, and DMC balls & skeins) for sale on the day.

The sample mixes #8 and #5, and shows all the different stitches they may wish to use. There will be several designs available – the simpler ones I will have prepared on a medium-coarse linen for a charge of €5; each project piece will have everything for completion.

If others prefer to use different linen, Debbie will have some pieces, but won’t be putting the designs on for them.  Anyone wanting to use other than the prepared linen should bring marker pens/pencils and be prepared to take about half an hour to create the design.

(With practice it’s quicker, but first time it really does take that long!)

The project should be completed (or at least embroidered) within the day-and-a-half!
